The Reason the Second Amendment is Unalienable

For introducing legislation to permit teachers and administrators to come to the armed defense of our children S.C. House Representative Phillip Lowe - District 60 (Darlington & Florence) is to be roundly applauded. As laudable as Representative Lowe’s bill is, it is regrettable that legislation must be proposed to secure the right to protect children in the first place.

In Washington, debate will focus on so-called assault weapons, high capacity magazines and guns that look particularly dangerous. Libertarians realize Washington’s debate will miss the point of the Second Amendment entirely.

The Second Amendment was not written expressly for hunting, or sport, or for defense against insane killers. It was written as the last defense of the people against a government gone mad. There are so many examples in this past century of unhinged governments that even the most rabid anti-gun zealot should give pause for thought.

The Genocide of Armenians, Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Russia, The Rape of Nanking, Mao’s China, Argentina’s junta, Pinochet’s Chile, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, Serbia’s Genocide in Srebrenica, Saddam’s Iraq, massacres in Sudan, Rwanda, Afghanistan at the hand of the Taliban – in each, unarmed populations were exterminated or subjugated. This list is not exhaustive or comprehensive, and each occurred in just the past 100 years.

The foresight of our Founders is not to be underestimated. The most cursory examination of recent history bears witness. Armed citizens have a chance to defend themselves; but, duck guns and squirrel rifles are not adequate to the task of defending the most basic of liberties in an era when governments’ machine gun non-combatants, patrol the skies with drones, and assassinate citizens with smart bombs.

Victor Kocher, Chairman of the SCLP said, “It’s absolutely mind-bending any government would insist its most precious resource be left to be prey of madmen. Hopefully the judicious reason expressed by Representative Lowe will be emulated by the rest of the General Assembly when it comes to protecting our children and honoring the true intent of the Second Amendment.”
